HUGE Unforced Error by the Democrats (UPDATED) « Politics As Usual »

Democratic convention flags found in trash:
dncc-flags.jpg

If this catches on, it will undermine all the work Obama and Democrat politicians have done to try and convince people they love America.

In the comments, Mr Lady points to one possible explanation. Plausible, but not definitive, as I explain in my reaction.

But if you go back to the original link, and follow the links there, you find this:

The person claims the majority of the bags with flags in them were near the trash, on a dock, and would have been thrown away. The person thinks it was probably an “oversight” by the Democrats rather than any nefarious plot against the flag. But the person doesn’t believe anyone was coming to get them: “The flags were there for a week and a day and no one came looking for them.”

Caution, someone may try to claim these pictures are of the flags. Nope. It's the flags in the picture I posted.

Now, I'm sure it is an oversight, not a planned dis of the nation's symbol.

However, as I say in the comments, my military experience makes me take such symbols very seriously, and there is no more important symbol of the United States than the flag. Seriously.

It probably doesn't matter as much to enough of the rest of the US to make a difference, though.

Again, it will be interesting to see how it plays out...and if it even gets mentioned by Newsweek, CNN, the NYTimes; and if so, what spin gets put on it by them.

My business is making assessments of what is really going on behind foreign govt smokescreens. And in this case, if the Republicans stole the flags, I expect to see theft charges made. Failure to make any charges will be a strong (though not definitive) indication that the flags were going to be thrown out.

Final Update:
From the Hot Air post's comments:

Remember we’re not just electing one person or two, we’re choosing an administration. The people that Obama associates with will be giving positions of authority and power over us in the new administration. We have to judge not just Obama’s actions, we also have to judge the actions of those around him.

Yeah, whatever. This is sort of a ridiculous thing to get one's panties in a knot about, don't you think? I suppose they could have left them laying all over the streets of Denver where they were thrown by the conventioneers.

You know, it was Denver citizens in charge of cleanup, NOT the DNC. Just saying.

Well, that's the thing about conservatives:
1) Tradition and respect are important to preserve
2) Symbols do have significance

There is a proper way to dispose of a flag; this ain't it. Denver citizens might have been in charge of cleanup...but who made the decision to be so careful with recyclables? That wasn't a Denver citizen, that was the Democrats, and they weren't that careful with the symbol of the United States of America.

...now, you see it as no big deal, and that's a valid viewpoint. If you don't invest meaning in a symbol, it has no meaning. I'm military, and so maybe symbols mean more to me than the average person, but I do think symbols mean enough to the average person that this will hurt Democrats...if this becomes common knowledge. It comes down to: are we moving more liberal, or more conservative? I still think we are moving more conservative (on abortion, guns, taxes, race, and defense are all winning issues for conservatives; evidence: Democrats can't flat-out say what they mean on these issues, they have to use euphemisms to explain their position), and this will cost the Democrats votes.

But we'll see, and you may be right.

If I thought there were any credibility at all to this story, yeah, I would've been disappointed. But, um...doesn't it seem ODD that they carefully separated all of the flags from the rest of the trash, wrapped them in their own bags, and then stored them all together?

It does, because they weren't being tossed. They were being re-used, and were taken and used as a smear campaign by oh, you go ahead and guess. I'll find the link.

I don't mean to growl. You know I loves you. But I know you can see through this stuff.

Found them all. http://momocrats.typepad.com/momocrats/2008/09/in-their-latest.html

Well, actually, I can't always see through this stuff.

I have no problems admitting I'm wrong when I'm wrong, though.

Still, the site you linked isn't proof by any means; is everything put into garbage bags intended for re-use? Of course not.

Now, if some Republicans stole them and then made this claim, that is pretty despicable. To confirm/finalize that storyline, the DNC should charge them with theft.

12k flags is worth quite a bit; it might get close to felony levels. You know it would be a political move to get a theft conviction on this.

But if they don't press theft charges, that is a good indication that the opposite spin is more likely closer to the truth.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

They won't charge them with theft because the DNC are a bunch of pussies who still think they have to take the moral highground and turn the other cheek. And they may loose the election because of that. If they spent 10 minute with their claws out, they could clobber the RNC right now. They won't do it. And it's pissing me off, honestly.

Either way, everything that is separated, put into separate, individual trash bags and stored together IS typical about to get recycled. I keep all my recycling in trash bags in my garage separated by what it is. If there had been a water bottle, or and ice cream cone, or a dirty diaper in one of those bags, MAYBE you'd have an argument. This is pretty obviously bad sportsmanship. THERE'S a shock.

I think we both think the other side gets away with dirty tricks too often and too easily.

You really do get a ton of spam, don't you?

I was trying to say that I think you're right, and that we can have some makeup text but sheesh, goodboy totally ruined the mood.
