An interesting anecdote.

I wonder how that fits into the typical meme that China is this oppressive, Stalinist nation that stifles any expression of individuality?

The situation described in the above linked article has existed since 1998 at least (the first time I saw it happen), but has probably been going on since the mid-80s, if not earlier. But make sure you read quietly; we wouldn't want to disturb the people who need an Evil Empire to replace the Soviet Union...

Hey, thanks for the link. It's true, I see it everywhere here: A guy with a chair and some scissors, out making his living on the sidewalk. Have you ever operated a small business in the US? Sometimes the hurdles are monstrous!

I dunno. There's an aspect to it about the lack of control that occurs when you're dealing with an incredibly large population.

In my limited experience in China, I have to say that my impression was that the Chinese are just a naturally capitalistic society. Or have pretty strong capitalistic tendencies. I'm drukn. I think there's a lot of potential there.
