I Renounce and Condemn Jimmy Swaggart's Comments « Social Issues »

Which comments?

These:

I'm trying to find the correct name for it . . . this utter absolute, asinine, idiotic stupidity of men marrying men. . . . I've never seen a man in my life I wanted to marry. And I'm gonna be blunt and plain; if one ever looks at me like that, I'm gonna kill him and tell God he died.

He is wrong, wrong, wrong on so many levels.

The first being that the main damage of a sin is against yourself. He would be damaging his own soul by killing (not to mention lying to God!) far more than any imagined damage of being looked at "like that".
The second being that this life on earth is not important, and so a mature Christian should not find any insult worth killing over. As Christians, our focus should be on the next life, and this life only impacts us as it prepares us for ourlives in Glory. No, that doesn't mean we should ignore politics and social issues because the next life is more important, because as Christians we should be working for a society that makes it easier for other people to recognize and accept Christ rather than more difficult.*
There are more levels,

*with the understanding that each sin committed increases the distance from God, strengthens the sinners rebellion, and makes it more difficult to obtain reconciliation with God.

Your statements hit home-I'm a baptized Catholic, but I believe "Jesus' said it all when he raised Lazarus-(Paraphrasing) He would have been with me in the NEXT life (not 'in paradise'), but your grief has made me bring him back-'I hope Lazarus' extra time in that life paid off"...

Nathan, have you ever read On Being Human or Heaven Is Not My Home: Learning to Live in God's Creation or New Way to Be Human : A Provocative Look at What It Means to Follow Jesus?

Let me know....

Rae,
Nope. I've mostly just read the Bible and most of C.S. Lewis' works, with a smattering of St. Augustine.

I have read all of those, as well :)

The ones that I listed are very intellectually spiritual reads. I came away thinking about more than a few things.....I don't know that everyone could read them, understand them, dissect them, but I do think that you could. And that you would write rather well about the content.

(Raises eyebrows) So......

On Wednesday, Swaggart said he has jokingly used the expression ''killing someone and telling God he died'' thousands of times, about all sorts of people. He said the expression is figurative and not meant to harm.

''It's a humorous statement that doesn't mean anything. You can't lie to God — it's ridiculous,'' Swaggart told The Associated Press. ''If it's an insult, I certainly didn't think it was, but if they are offended, then I certainly offer an apology.''

Swaggart was a popular television evangelist during the 1980s until a 1987 sex scandal involving a prostitute that he met in a seedy New Orleans motel. Swaggart never confessed to anything more than an unspecified sin. A few years later, he was stopped by police while driving in California with a suspected prostitute in his car.

Hypocrite? Idiot? Jerk? I vote for all three.

Mr. Swaggart is so wrong yet again. After reading one of his books where he bashed Catholics, I simply spent a few hours in church and biblical history books to prove that Swaggart was wrong, mis-guided, and un-researched in his rants. Now he's done it again. A man this full of hate (and with his ignorance of the Holy Catholics, so arrogant and blind), he is in no position to preach his ignorant opinions to many people who may take his radical word as truth.
